triathlon skills

Triathlons are a daunting sport. My thoughts were like most people. They are done at the crack of dawn, usually on a Sunday when most people are catching up on sleep from the tough working week. My perception of triathletes were they are super fit athletes who are athletic and spend more money on equipment than most people spend on an overseas holiday.
The competitors must train all the time and must be quite talented to be able to swim at 6.30 in the morning. I was thinking I could never do a triathlon because I am a hopeless swimmer, 20 kilograms overweight and I have an old bike. After another winter and a few extra pounds - I decided I would make my triathlon debut.
I have seen books where it suggests you should train 12 weeks before your first triathlon, I decided I would fill out the application form online and that would be my training for my first triathlon.
So, at 6am early in the summer I was standing at the beach getting ready for my first triathlon. To my relief I looked around and saw 150 other guys, just like me, some of them in speedos, some in shorts and some in triathlon suits. Some of them were chubby, some were older, some were younger. I was in the beginners triathlon, the super fit athletes were in the division that started 2 hours later.
I began to think that this wasn't going to be as bad as I thought!
So, then the next big step. Swimming in my first triathlon. I'm a guy who can hardly swim 50 metres at the local pool. What was I thinking? The water was surprisingly warmer than I expected and morning was an absolute cracker. The swim started and I was able to swim, about 20 metres, then I had to go around the first triathlon marker. This was a bit hard, but I survived. Then I started to struggle. I had about 200 metres more to swim. I think I was going backwards and I was scared. But I had my pride, so I decided I would struggle on, dog paddle if I needed to.
I can tell you I never thought the swim was going to end. But after 9 minutes it was over. 9 minutes for 250 metres. I thought how soft I had been that I had been so afraid of an experience that only takes 9 minutes. I got to the shore and had to run to my bike, I thought anyone can ride a bike. So I coped with the ride, no problems.
The run, also, a bit of struggle.
After 1 hour I had finished my first triathlon. It was a wonderful feeling and it was still before 9am on a Sunday. I had a whole day in front of me and unlike going for a 1 hour run, which I was incapable of doing, my legs didn't hurt, every part of my body was a little tired but not too bad.
That day I was at a bbq and I was very proud of my achievement and I could sense that my friends were pretty impressed too. The best thing about doing my first triathlon is it motivated me to get moving and train for my second triathlon, and my third triathlon. I now love the sport and have created a triathlon hub called triathlons101.com. So, if you are looking for some motivation to get fit, then do what I did and just jump right in and I know you will love it and you will be very proud of your efforts.
